Good Hotel Guide Review
In Ballsbridge, a tree-lined residential district within walking distance of the centre, this 19th-century schoolhouse by the Grand Canal is today a hotel with a restaurant and a ‘very jolly’ bar. The Victorian building flaunts distinctive turrets and high chimneys; an original wooden staircase, panelled walls and a stone fireplace within. Period-style bedrooms (some in the basement) are decorated with pastel shades and William Morris patterns; the best rooms have canal or garden views, or access to the lawn. Pub classics and ‘basic’ bistro dishes (beetroot and goat’s cheese salad; chargrilled chicken burger) are served all day under a vaulted ceiling in the restaurant and lively bar, or alfresco on the terrace.
