Good Hotel Guide Review

‘We enjoyed our very expensive one-night stay,’ writes a reader who pushed the boat out at Jeremy Goring’s grand Edwardian hotel, the last of its kind in London to be run by the founding family. Astonishingly, in the heart of Belgravia, it has a one-acre garden. From the cheapest street-facing rooms, to deluxe doubles with marble bathroom, and luxury garden-view rooms with silk-lined walls, all benefit from 24-hour room service and shoeshine. A room above the entrance was ‘very nice, especially two quite lovely armchairs’. Minor ‘blemish’: a ‘hazardous deep-angled step’ in the bathroom. On the ground floor, where footmen in scarlet tailcoats buzz about, the bar can be abuzz too: ‘We were twice placed on the fringes.’ However, ‘public areas are in perfect condition’, staff are ‘plentiful and courteous’, and the dining room, designed by David Linley, is ‘a joy to behold’. Here is seriously upmarket cooking. Thumbs up for Yorkshire grouse; glazed lobster omelette, perhaps with duck-fat chips, lobster Caesar salad. Breakfast is ‘relaxed’, with ‘plenty of choices’. In a pavilion overlooking the garden, Siren, a separate seafood restaurant run by Michelin-starred Nathan Outlaw, has opened recently. (Anthony Bradbury, H and AM)
