Good Hotel Guide Review

A royal warrant and a Michelin star are but two accolades held by London’s last grand Edwardian hotel, still run by the family that built it. Fourth-generation owner Jeremy Goring has edged it into the 21st century, but it retains the traditional values of a golden age. ‘Guests are politely reminded that mobile phones and laptops are not welcome in the public rooms,’ writes a reader this year. A vintage lift with ‘highly polished brass plates’ bears guests up to luxurious bedrooms, some with silk-lined walls and views of the one-acre garden, an oasis so close to Buckingham Palace. Shoes left out overnight were returned ‘in a stout and elegant cardboard box, every pair individually wrapped in tissue paper’. The dining room, designed by David Linley, lit at night by Swarovski chandeliers, was, oddly, one cold day, rather chilly. The chef’s Michelin-starred dishes showcase fine British produce, perhaps Cornish cod, Jersey Royals, asparagus, peas, cockle and bacon velouté; aged sirloin of beef, pickled red onions, smoked cauliflower, wild garlic oil. Breakfast has ‘full waiter service with not a self-service counter in sight’. (Harry and Annette Medcalf)
